Manor Cottage, Burnsall

Situated in the centre of the village of Burnsall and with a garden
running down to the River Wharfe, Manor Cottage (pictured on the left in the illustration left) is a traditional stone built cottage full of Yorkshire Dales charm. The cottage dates back to the early c17, a time of great building activity in Burnsall; the Old Grammar School today’s Primary School) was built at this time and the Church extensively renovated by Sir William Craven, a famous local dignitary who, like Dick Whittington, went to London to make his fortune only to end up becoming its Lord Mayor!

Manor Cottage has some interesting features, not least amongst them being its sitting room which is equipped with a ‘Scots Window’ to give early warning of any invading Northern Hordes. The cottage also has a magnificent stone fireplace, only recently uncovered, which has a secret cavity in the chimney for the storage of weapons to be used in the event of the aforementioned Scots invasion.

The cottage has been in the Lodge family for over 50 years. Present owner Rosemary Lodge is a well known Dales & Equestrian artist (her work is shown here & on other pages). As Rosemary lives nearby regular visitors to Manor Cottage enjoy the benefits of staying in owner-maintained and cherished accommodation, where someone is always on site during their stay to help out if there are any problems or to advise on interesting days out etc, if so required. And if you like horses, then Rosemary will be happy to introduce you to her four legged family – Dales bred ponies Paddy & Danny, and little Sally who lives in the garden paddock!!

Our large shared garden runs from the back of the cottage down to the riverside where you can join the Dalesway footpath, and stroll to Grassington (3 miles), Bolton Abbey (6 miles), or even further if you’re feeling really energetic!
